Peace in the Storm: Trusting God Through the Hurricane

When hurricanes come, they bring fear, uncertainty, and the sense that everything solid is being shaken. Winds howl, waters rise, and sometimes all we can do is hold on and pray that the storm will pass. But even in the middle of chaos, there is One who never moves — our anchor, Jesus Christ.

In Mark 4:35–41, we read how Jesus calmed the storm. The disciples, terrified as the waves crashed over their boat, cried out, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Jesus stood up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” Instantly, the storm stopped. The same voice that spoke calm over the sea still speaks peace into the storms of our lives today.

When the physical hurricane hits, or when life’s storms rage around you — a diagnosis, a loss, a broken relationship — remember that Jesus is not unaware of your fear. He is in your boat. The winds may blow, but He has not left you.

Psalm 46:1–3 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”

As you prepare for or endure a hurricane:

  • Pray before the storm. Invite God’s peace to settle your heart.

  • Trust in His protection. He may not always stop the storm immediately, but He will hold you through it.

  • Look for His presence in the aftermath. Often, His goodness shines brightest when we see His people serving one another, offering shelter, food, and prayer.

The storm may shake your surroundings, but it cannot shake the foundation of your faith when it’s built on Christ.

Prayer:

Lord, when the storms of life come, help me to remember that You are my refuge. Calm my fears and steady my heart. Teach me to trust You in every wind and wave, knowing You are in control. Thank You for being my peace in every storm. Amen.
