The Competence of Faith

We live in a world that measures competence by degrees, résumés, certifications, and accomplishments. Society tells us we are only as good as our last success. Yet Paul reminds us that the true source of competence is not found in ourselves, but in God.

Faith itself is not simply belief—it is reliance. It is leaning into the One who equips us beyond our natural abilities. Competence of faith is knowing that even when our strength falters, God’s power is sufficient. When we surrender our weakness, God’s Spirit works through us, making us able where we were once unable.

Consider Moses, who claimed he could not speak well. Yet God used him to stand before Pharaoh. Consider Gideon, who saw himself as the least of his family. Yet God made him a mighty warrior. Time and again, Scripture shows us that competence is not born from self-confidence but from God-confidence.

Application

  1. Acknowledge your limitations. Don’t hide them—bring them before God.

  2. Rely on His Spirit. Each task, no matter how small, becomes holy when empowered by Him.

  3. Step forward boldly. Faith becomes competence when we act, trusting that God will supply what we lack.

Prayer

Father, I confess that too often I measure my worth by what I can do in my own strength. Remind me today that my true competence comes from You alone. Where I feel weak, let Your power be strong. Where I feel uncertain, let Your Spirit guide me. Teach me to walk in the competence of faith, trusting You to equip me for every good work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
